Did you know?
Meaning of Name: The name Lent comes through Middle English lente and Old English lencten or lengten, referring to the season of spring and the lengthening of days. It is also related to the French word lente, which means “to move slowly.”
Did you know Purple is the Liturgical Colour for Lent?
Purple is a cool colour on the colour wheel, reflecting divinity, wisdom, dignity, mystery, and creativity. Dark purple is a penitential colour, evoking sadness and deep reflection.
In the first century CE, purple dye was very hard to come by, so only the wealthy could afford purple garments.
What is Holy Week?
Holy Week is a time to reflect deeply on the person of Jesus Christ as we retell the story of his death and ressurection. We reflect on how to become closer to God and seek ways to return to our spirtual life and faith with God through the stories of Jesus’ ministry of miracles, lessons, love and forgiveness.
Palm Sunday: This marks the beginning of Holy Week and commemorates Jesus' wonderful entry into the city of Jerusalem, where people waved palm branches to welcome him. The people are said to have thrown their cloaks down and used palm leaves to carpet Jesus’ every step, calling him Messiah! Saviour! How would you care for Jesus if you saw him on his way into Jerusalem?
Maundy Thursday:This day remembers Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples, where he shared bread and wine, and gave them a new commandment to love one another. Consider saying a special prayer at meal time today to remember Jesus with his friends in the upper room.
Good Friday: This day remembers Jesus' crucifixion and death on the cross, a sad day, but it reminds us of our life and death. Since it is spring, consider the buds on the trees and the signs of new life after winter time.
Holy Saturday: This day marks a time of waiting and preparation. Take a day of rest today. Reflect on what you are grateful for!
Easter Sunday: This day celebrates Jesus' resurrection, his victory over death, and the promise of new life.
The Song of Faith 2006,
The Risen Christ lives today,
present to us and the source of our hope.
In response to who Jesus was
and to all he did and taught,
to his life, death, and resurrection,
and to his continuing presence with us through the Spirit,
we celebrate him as
the Word made flesh,
the one in whom God and humanity are perfectly joined,
the transformation of our lives,
the Christ.
