Empowering Caregivers: Elder Care Workshop Series
Caring for our elderly loved ones is a deeply fulfilling responsibility, but it can also present unique challenges. If you find yourself taking on increasingly significant care responsibilities for elderly parents or loved ones, our "Empowering Caregivers: Elder Care Workshop Series" is here to support you on this journey.
The "Empowering Caregivers" workshop series is a community-driven initiative organized by Kimbourne Park United Church. It is designed to provide valuable resources, practical knowledge, and emotional support to those who are caring for elderly family members or friends. Although hosted by the church, this program is open to everyone, regardless of religious affiliation.

Location
Sessions will take place:
in the Sanctuary at Kimbourne Park United Church,
or online, through Zoom.
We will be combining in-person and virtual elements to accommodate both on-site attendees and remote participants. Our hope is to experience the benefits of face-to-face interactions while also providing accessibility to those who may be unable to attend in person due to geographical constraints, health concerns, or other reasons.
Price
This workshop series is free and open to all.

Offerings
Sessions will be on Fridays, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.
This year, we are offering four programs, each meeting weekly for between 4-6 weeks, focusing on different components of caregiving. Please feel free to sign-up for each of the programs that might interest you.
The Aging Process & Dementia
September 13th - October 11th
Understanding the natural aging process is crucial for providing effective care. This series will delve into the physical, cognitive, and emotional changes that accompany aging, with a particular focus on dementia. Participants will learn about the different types of dementia, early warning signs, progression, and how it impacts daily life. Practical strategies for managing symptoms, enhancing communication, and creating a dementia-friendly environment will also be discussed.
Systems Navigation
October 25th to November 22nd
Navigating the complex healthcare and social support systems can be daunting for caregivers. This series will provide a comprehensive guide to accessing essential services, including medical care, home care, financial assistance, and community resources. Participants will learn how to effectively communicate with healthcare providers, understand insurance and benefits, and utilize local and national support networks to ensure their loved ones receive the best possible care.
End of Life
January 10th to February 7th
This sensitive series addresses the logistics and emotional aspects of end-of-life care. Topics include advance care planning, understanding palliative and hospice care, and navigating the legal and practical considerations of death and dying. Participants will gain insights into discussing and documenting wishes with loved ones, making informed decisions, and accessing support during this challenging time. Emphasis will be placed on creating a dignified and compassionate end-of-life experience.
Self-Care for Caregivers
February 21st to March 21st
Caregiving can be both rewarding and exhausting. This series emphasizes the importance of self-care for caregivers to prevent burnout and maintain their well-being. Participants will explore practical self-care strategies, stress management techniques, and ways to balance caregiving responsibilities with personal needs. The workshop will also highlight the importance of seeking support from family, friends, and professional resources to ensure caregivers can continue providing the best care possible.
